Bruce McMenomy

Scholars Online
Instructor, Principal
Bellevue, WA
I've been teaching Latin, Greek, literature (classical and other), and history online since 1993. In both Latin and Greek, but also in literature courses in English, my chief goal is mastery of the language, and an understanding of how an author means what he or she means. To that end, I wrote Syntactical Mechanics, which was published by the University of Oklahoma in 2014.

My B.A. is from Pomona College in Claremont, CA; at UCLA I got as far as an M.A. in history before defecting to the Classics department. There I scrambled to do makeup work in Greek until I could get an M.A. and eventually a Ph.D., with a specialization in Mediaeval Latin. My dissertation was an edition of part of the commentary on the book of Matthew by Claudius of Turin, ca. 815.

While I enjoy classical and mediaeval scholarship, my true calling seems to be teaching. As part of the Scholars Online team, I've been able to do that a great deal -- on an average year I have about a dozen courses going during the academic year, and three or four more during the summer. I'm also a die-hard Shakespeare fan, and teach my way through the entire Shakespeare dramatic corpus every three years.

I'm married to Christe McMenomy (historian of science and fellow online teacher), have three kids (all grown now, one of them also a classics scholar), and in off hours enjoy cooking and sampling Washington wines.
